13-16 September 2004
Seattle, WA  USA

From September 13 - 16, 2004, SBRI hosted the TriTryp Genomes Meeting 2004, a landmark international scientific conference, which brought  together experts from around the world to discuss the first drafts of the genome sequences for three parasites that cause deadly infectious diseases including leishmaniasis, Chagas disease and African sleeping sickness. SBRI was chosen as host because of its leadership role in determining the genome sequences of Leishmania major, the parasite that causes leishmaniasis, a disease currently afflicting U.S. soldiers stationed in the Middle East, and Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease, which affects millions in central and South America, as well as its reputation for cutting edge work on these pathogens and key role in comparing the three genomes.

Approximately 130 scientists from 19 countries attended the four-day meeting  held at the SBRI Building in the heart of Seattle’s growing biotech hub in the South Lake Union neighborhood. Many of the countries represented, including India, Argentina, Venezuela, Uganda and Kenya, are among those where leishmaniasis, Chagas disease and African sleeping sickness are endemic. Support for the conference came  from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, and the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases (NIAID).

The completed first drafts of the Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Leishmania major genome sequences, their annotations and comparisons were discussed at this meeting by scientists who sequenced the genomes, as well as those whose assistance they recruited to help analyze the genomes. As the genomes were being sequenced, new data was continuously provided via the Internet so that scientists all around the world have had the opportunity to perform analyses, which was also presented at the meeting.
