  • Sokoine University of Agriculture, Morogoro, Tanzania

The Program

Sokoine University and Seattle Biomedical Research Institute are partnering with the American Society for Cell Biology to convene a special workshop on the Cell Biology of Protozoan Pathogens. An international faculty will lead a two-week workshop to train graduate students and young scientists from Africa in basic and applied research on protozoan pathogens, including malaria parasites and trypanosomes.

Areas to be covered include:

  • Cell Biology of Protozoa

  • Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics

  • T Cell Biology & Malaria Immunity

  • Research Ethics

  • Methods to Study Gene Function

  • Vaccine & Drug Discovery

  • Antigenic Variation in Human Parasites

  • Developing Research Proposals

The workshop will emphasize student participation through symposia, poster sessions, roundtable discussions, hands-on laboratory sessions and informal interactions. The workshop organizers hope to generate interest in parasitic diseases research, to promote networks of East African and international scientists and students, and to identify graduate students and young scientists who may be interested in graduate or postdoctoral training at research facilities in East Africa or overseas.

Especially outstanding students selected to participate will receive support for their travel, room and board. Applications should be received no later than 4 April 2008. Applicants should include an abstract (1 page only) describing research that the student has performed or would like to perform on some aspect of protozoan pathogens.

Applications may be downloaded as PDF file or Word document. After completing the application, please email it, along with your CV and abstract, to Dr. Gwakisa and Dr. Duffy at workshop2008@sbri.org.

NOTE: Adobe Acrobat Exchange was used to convert the application to a Portable Document Format (PDF). The PDF files may be viewed and printed if Adobe Acrobat Reader is on your system and your Browser has been configured to read it.
