SBRI offers applied lab experience to undergraduate students from various universities.  These students experience the challenge of biomedical research, while learning biotechnology concepts and scientific methods.  They benefit from the latest technologies and resources available and have the opportunity to work in close collaboration with other scientists in the laboratory.   SBRI provides many avenues for pursuing a career in science for undergraduates including short and long term and paid and unpaid opportunities.  Internships for credit arranged through a university or college are also available on a case by case basis.

While general inquiries are received year round, there is a defined application period for our formal summer Global Health Internship program.

SBRI Global Health Summer Undergraduate Internships – Summer 2008

This elite program provides an opportunity to spend a summer working side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to infectious disease research.  For 2008 SBRI will place 3 highly qualified undergraduate interns at the Institute.  The program runs for a period of 10 weeks and culminates with a formal report and presentation by each intern.

Summer Global Health Internships will be conducted from June 9, 2008 to August 15, 2008.  To complete their assignments during the 10-week period, interns should be willing to make a commitment of 30-40 hours per week.

Eligibility
To be eligible, candidates must be undergraduate students with Sophomore, Junior or Senior status in the 2008-09 academic school year.  Entering freshmen and recent graduates are not eligible.  Current SBRI employees and returning interns are also ineligible.  As a temporary, summer intern all you will not be considered an Institute employees and therefore will not be eligible for SBRI benefits.

What You Will Learn
With SBRI scientific staff, interns will assist in specific research projects in a designated SBRI scientific program.  Prior to beginning work in the laboratory, interns will receive training with chemicals and biological materials and learn sterile and other general scientific techniques.  Laboratory tasks include solution making, sterilizing, library research, materials inventory, etc.  In some instances, work may include tissue culture, gel electrophoresis, DNA preps, bacterial cultures, and computer work.  The experience will help prepare students interested in careers related to the biosciences.

Final Reports
Following the internship period, participating interns will be required to prepare a final report recapping their experiences and learning moments at SBRI.  The reports will be showcased at an end of program luncheon and presented by each intern.

Stipends
We are pleased to announce that funding for the SBRI Global Health Internship program comes from SBRI donors.  Funds are raised through the Institute’s Discovery Alliance Program.  Interns are paid at an hourly rate of $10.00.  At a full-time schedule, this equates to approximately $4000.00 in earnings.  Internships may be extended beyond 10 weeks with approval from the Principal Investigator and Human Resources but typically no additional funds are available.

Application Procedure
Prospective candidates must apply electronically via the Internet, fax or standard mail delivery to the SBRI Human Resources Department.  Applications for the Global Health Internship Program are accepted from February 22, 2008 to March 16, 2008.

In addition to the application, all candidates must submit at least 1 letter of reference (but no more than 2) speaking to their academic performance and/or goals and interest in science.  For example, letters from professors, advisors, or mentors are appropriate.

All of the items must be postmarked or electronically submitted to the SBRI Human Resources Department on or before 11:59 PM (PDT) Sunday, March 16, 2008.

Selection
Interns are selected competitively on the basis of overall qualifications and interests.  Successful candidates will be required to submit the following documentation to the Institute prior to beginning their training:

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.

Applicants will be notified of their selection by the SBRI Human Resources Department within five weeks of the application due date.  Additional materials may be required by selected applicants.  Applicants will be notified at that time of the necessary materials.
