East African Regional Workshop

Since 2002, an international group of scientists have led the East African Regional Workshop, which emphasizes intensive hands-on training in order to help young scientists develop new research and laboratory skills.  Sokoine University and Seattle Biomedical Research Institute are partnering with the American Society for Cell Biology to convene a special workshop on the Cell Biology of Protozoan Pathogens. An international faculty will lead a two-week workshop to train graduate students and young scientists from Africa in basic and applied research on protozoan pathogens, including malaria parasites and trypanosomes.

Areas to be covered include:

  • Cell Biology of Protozoa

  • Functional Genomics and Bioinformatics

  • T Cell Biology & Malaria Immunity

  • Research Ethics

  • Methods to Study Gene Function

  • Vaccine & Drug Discovery

  • Antigenic Variation in Human Parasites

  • Developing Research Proposals

The workshop will emphasize student participation through symposia, poster sessions, roundtable discussions, hands-on laboratory sessions and informal interactions. The workshop organizers hope to generate interest in parasitic diseases research, to promote networks of East African and international scientists and students, and to identify graduate students and young scientists who may be interested in graduate or postdoctoral training at research facilities in East Africa or overseas.
