SBRI eliminates the world's most devastating infectious diseases through leadership in scientific discovery.

"The fight against malaria is on many fronts, with the ultimate goal of reducing poverty by reducing the burden of disease." - Dr. Gordon Perkin, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Overview

Through SBRI’s BioQuest science education program, we strive to inspire and build a community that promotes science and global health. BioQuest offers hands-on, socially relevant and career-building experiences allowing:

  • high school students to acquire interests and skills that can lead to careers in scientific research and meet state-mandated science education learning requirements

  • teachers to expand their professional development with global health content and curriculum

  • the community to understand the critical importance of global health and the role of research

The result? The next generation of life science leadership and advocates to improve global health through research

BioQuest Program
Designed to engage students through experience rather than demonstration, the BioQuest science education program offers a unique learning opportunity. SBRI’s world-class researchers share their knowledge and passion for science while introducing high school students and their teachers to the crucial role of research in improving global health. Through BioQuest, we are hastening the pace with which scientific discovery reaches students, educators and the community.  For more information on BioQuest, please follow this link.

BioQuest Achievements for 2006-07Academic Year
SBRI's BioQuest science education program expanded to enrich both local and worldwide science learners this year, including:

  • 49 “Site Explorations”, classroom tours of SBRI and hands-on science activities for 44 Washington schools (900+ visitors).

  • Three sessions of BioQuest Academy, an intesive 30-hour program to connect 36 high school juniors with scientists in the BioQuest Discovery Lab.

  • Online resources (approximately 3,000 visitors this year).

  • Four teacher professional development workshops, including Workshop on Malaria and the SBRI Summer Science Workshop on Immunology.

  • Pilot program in 2007 for three undergraduate Global Health interns, working directly within prominent SBRI labs.

  • Five summer high school interns in 2006 in SBRI labs and offices.
