Since 2002, an international collaboration of scientists from
SBRI, the University of Washington, Sokoine
University of Agriculture, University of Dar es
Salaam and other organizations have led the East African
Regional Workshop, which emphasizes intensive hands-on training in order to help young scientists develop new research and laboratory skills.
The Workshop is supported by grants to Patrick
Duffy and Ken
Stuart from the Fogarty International Center
at the National Institutes of Health.
The two-weeklong course features faculty from around the world who lead the workshop for young East African students and scientists interested in basic and applied research on protozoan pathogens, including
malaria,
African trypanosomes
and
Leishmania. Areas covered include:
-
Antigen Discovery and Validation
-
Bioinformatics
-
Live and Attenuated Parasite Vaccines
-
Clinical Trials of Vaccines
-
Proposal Writing
-
Good Clinical Practice
-
Research Ethics
-
Immunology and Molecular Biology Assays
The workshop emphasizes student participation through symposia, poster sessions, roundtable discussions, hands-on laboratory sessions and informal interactions.
