With training an inherent part of our mission here at SBRI, each year we host a conference in Seattle and a workshop in Africa. Both are designed to offer young scientists a chance to share their work, meet with other scientists in the field and discuss the latest in the world of research.
The Seattle Parasitology Conference, which provides a local forum for presentation and discussion of research progress on the molecular and cellular biology of
protozoans, marked its 16th anniversary in May 2004. For
three years, SBRI has co-hosted the East African
Regional Workshop, which is focused on assisting young scientists from developing countries develop new lab skills.
In September 2004, SBRI hosted the TriTryp
Genome Meeting, a landmark conference that
marked the completion of the first draft of the
Trypanosoma brucei, Trypanosoma cruzi, and Leishmania major genome sequencing projects. Attendance at this meeting
included researchers who generated and annotated the genome sequences, those who have used the genome sequence information extensively,
and those who are interested in the future applications of the genomic information, including representatives of funding agencies. The meeting format is designed to provide an opportunity for researchers to share their results and stimulate new directions for the field - directions intended to accelerate the development of measures to combat the diseases caused by these pathogens.
