Education
STEP IN
Step into science and discover the uniqueness of BioQuest. Through hands-on
learning experiences, BioQuest propels students into the real world of science.
Only at SBRI can you find an authentic learning lab –
complete with latest technologies and access to leading infectious disease
scientists – contained within the footprint of a
world-class research organization.
Students
BioQuest amplified each student's vision of his or her future, opening up
countless opportunities to make a positive impact on the world. High school
students can access BioQuest in several ways:
-
Site Explorations. These three
-hour interactive job shadows for entire classes give students the unique
opportunity to roll up their sleeves and learn side-by-side with SBRI
scientists in the BioQuest Lab. Where else can a high school student learn
about malaria vaccine development by dissecting a mosquito?
-
BioQuest Academy. What's it really
like to be a scientist? High school juniors step into this immersion
program to find out. Hands-on investigations alongside SBRI scientist
teach students real lab skills, while follow-up mentorship provides support
for college application and careers in science.
-
Summer Internships. BioQuest
offers a select number of highly-competitive, paid summer internships for
18-year-olds in SBRI's research laboratories.
Teachers
Teachers have one of
the most challenging, yet rewarding, jobs of all—sparking
and sustaining innovative thinking in young people. BioQuest can help with:
-
Curriculum Development. BioQuest
brings together scientists and teachers to build attention-grabbing global
health curriculum that can be used in science and math classrooms.
-
Professional Advancement. Through
a series of interactive workshops, teachers learn to engage students through
the relevance of improving global health.
-
Virtual Researcher. Not everyone
can visit BioQuest, but all take part in the experience. Visit
www.sbribioquest.org for our free
print and animated curriculum resources.
Community
Perhaps you're past
high school age, but count yourself as a lifelong learner. You can get
engaged through
-
Public Outreach. Reducing the
burden of infectious diseases takes talent, commitment and engagement.
We invite you to learn more by attending an SBRI event or reading a book
from our suggested reading list.
-
BioQuest Gallery. Created as a
"community living room for life sciences," the BioQuest Gallery features
hands-on exhibits to highlight the challenges of infectious disease and the
hope offered by SBRI's research.
STEP FORWARD
Here's what recent
student visitors report:
-
91% said BioQuest appreciably increased
their awareness of infectious diseases.
-
74% said BioQuest helped increase their
understanding of the value of classroom science.
-
72% believe they can significantly
contribute to improving global health after visiting SBRI.
Is BioQuest truly
helping build the next generation of scientists and global health leaders?
Absolutely! Nearly 90% of BioQuest Academy graduates selected majors in science,
technology, engineering or math at top-ranked colleges and universities across
the U.S.
STEP UP
The future of
biomedical research and the health of our world's population hinge on getting
young people excited about careers in science and related careers. They
will ensure the great scientific breakthroughs of tomorrow. And, there is
a role for you to play.
