A
message from our Board Chair
Each year, SBRI’s Annual Report (PDF)
is our “report card” to the community. So, how did we rate in 2007?
We’ve built a specialized insectary for growing the human form of malaria –
only the fourth of its kind in the US. It is vital to accelerating our
genetically attenuated vaccine candidate into human trials.
SBRI committed to ramp up its research into TB, a disease recently described
as “not newly emergent but extremely urgent.” We recruited Dr. David Sherman to
start a TB drug discovery program.
We expanded our HIV/AIDS program as we strive to develop a viable vaccine.
Dr. Don Sodora, an expert in HIV correlates of protection, recently joined our
team from the University of Texas.
Charity Navigator awarded SBRI a highly coveted four-star rating – for the
third year in a row – reflecting SBRI’s commitment to sound financial management
and donor stewardship. We’re in elite company – only 9 percent of the charities
evaluated get a four-star rating three years running.
So, I’d say we get high marks on our ’07 report card, but please judge for
yourself.
I anticipate another great year for SBRI, but will participate from a
different standpoint. After chairing SBRI’s Board of Trustees for three years,
I’m passing the gavel to my very able colleague Maud Daudon.
My involvement as an avid global health advocate and SBRI supporter
continues, and I invite you to discover your own role at SBRI to improve global
health.
